Gravel Checker (Seasonal)
Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Manager of Infrastructure Services, the Gravel Checker is a seasonal field position primarily responsible for assisting in the administration and co-ordination of Yellowhead County’s annual summer gravel programs on County maintained roads in accordance with County contracts.
Position Responsibilities
General
- Assist in the administration and co-ordination of the summer gravel programs by ensuring the even application of surface gravel to designated roads at appropriate rates.
- Maintain accurate written and electronic records of gravel application rates, quantities, and distances.
- Assist with the documentation and collection of County infrastructure information, such as road and culvert data as assigned.
- Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Safe operation of County vehicles and equipment such as pick-up trucks.
- Completion of work site and vehicle safety hazard inspections.
- Complete additional safety training as required.
- Complete all other duties as assigned.
Qualification, Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements
- Completion of Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
- Possess valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate.
- Basic to intermediate technical aptitude, including the operation of Microsoft Office applications such as Excel required.
- Previous experience/education with road maintenance activities considered an asset.
- Completion of first- or second-year university/college course work in a relevant field would be considered an asset.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Good documentation skills.
- Must be punctual and of reliable character.
- Must be able to work with limited supervision.
- Possess valid Class 5 Driver's License (or equivalent) with fewer than 6 demerits.
- Provide a current 5-year Driver's Abstract, if applicable.
- Completion of Defensive Driving certification.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
Working Environment
Working Conditions:
- 90% of work duties conducted outdoors in all weather conditions.
- 10% of work duties are administrative such as completing documentation.
- Will often work alongside third-party contractors or alone.
- Potential interaction with domestic animals and/or wildlife.
- Physical exertion and some heavy lifting up to 50 lbs required.
- Long periods of sitting in vehicle.
- Frequent and/or daily driving required on gravel road surfaces.
- Must be willing to work overtime and weekends as required.
- Public contact may be confrontational.
The hourly range is $23.62 to $25.71 per hour. This is a seasonal position running approximatley from May 5, 2025 till August 29, 2025.
